The Joint Logistics Unit (Victoria) project was made up of three major stages, upgrading the existing Freight Distribution Centre, upgrading eleven 60 year old warehouses and workshops, and the construction of a modern purpose built facility, known as the Soldier Support Warehouse (SSW), to enhance the operational capability and provide efficient logistical and warehousing support to Defence. The new SSW is dedicated to the storage of clothing and other solder support items and will centralise soldier support stock into one building.
The main component of the project, the SSW, consists of a post tensioned concrete slab on ground covered by a structural steel portal frame and precast concrete panelling, and is clad with Colorbond Ultra metal sheeting. The building is 19,000m2 or approximately 4 acres (16 house lots) under roof and has the storage capacity for 19,000 pallet spaces.
Sophisticated logistics equipment such as vertical storage carousels, pallet wrapping machines, conveyors and pallet scanners is a feature of the facility.
Also included within the project is 19 mobile mechanical handling equipment units such as stock pickers and fork lift trucks.
As Joss has considerable experience in the construction of warehousing and factory facilities, we developed an epoxy based concrete floor joint which will result in little maintenance and provide a smooth transition for the small hard wheeled handling equipment.
The project was handed over on budget and within time to the complete satisfaction to the Department of Defence and their stakeholders.
